We want this website and the SEE Institute building to work for as many people as possible.

The standard we aim for

We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 level AA across this website.

What this site does

• Every page can be used with a keyboard alone. Focus is always visible, and the enquiry dialog keeps focus inside it and returns you to where you were when it closes.
• Headings run in order, so you can navigate by structure with a screen reader.
• Form confirmations and filter results are announced, not just shown.
• Links inside text are underlined, so they do not rely on colour alone.
• Every image carries a text alternative.
• Text can be resized and the layout reflows down to small screens without horizontal scrolling.
• If your device asks for reduced motion or increased contrast, this site honours it.
• A Display options button sits in the bottom-right of every page. It can enlarge the text, raise the contrast, stop motion and underline every link. Your choice is remembered on that device.
• Colour contrast meets AA against every background we use, including our own brand colour, which is reserved for graphics rather than text.

How we have tested it

Every page has been checked with automated tooling (axe-core, against WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 A and AA) with no outstanding issues. Keyboard operation has been walked through by hand, including the menus, the mobile menu, the enquiry dialog and the display options, and the accessibility tree that screen readers read has been inspected page by page.

Listening tests with real screen readers, and testing with people who use assistive technology day to day, are still to be done. Automated tools catch perhaps a third of real barriers, so we are not claiming this site is fully accessible on the strength of them.

Known gaps

• Text placed over photography cannot be measured automatically. We have chosen those colours deliberately, but they have not been verified with users.
• The map on our Visit page is provided by Google and we do not control its accessibility. The address and directions are given as text next to it.
• The Display options button is fixed to the corner of the screen. On a very short window it can sit over a small amount of content; it can be closed, and the same settings are available in your browser and operating system.
• Access details for the building, parking, entrances and event spaces are being confirmed and will be published here.
